Tuesday night the Select Board declared a climate emergency and voted unanimously to adopt the Climate Emergency Declaration resolution presented to them by the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe, League of Women Voters of the Plymouth Area, Southeastern Massachusetts Pine Barrens Alliance, and Sustainable Plymouth.
The purpose of presenting the Climate Emergency Declaration as a Select Board Resolution was to bring attention to the fact that our ecosystem is in crisis, experiencing extinction rates unprecedented in human history and accelerating sea level rise, and to ensure that the Town of Plymouth factors climate and environmental impact into all policies, procedures, planning, and decision making. 17 Organizations signed on as supporters of the Climate Emergency Declaration.
The Select Board also unanimously supported the other 3 CEE items, including voting to hire a Climate Resiliency/ Sustainability Planner. SP has sent our priorities for that position in the form of a job description.
Let’s celebrate this important step in the right direction
